Case study: TKL lawyers successfully assisted local and international business to recover $600,000 in damages caused by the January unrest

The TKL team successfully supported their clients, an official distributor of the American sportswear brand in Kazakhstan and a local supplier of household appliances, in procedures for the recovery of damages caused during the January unrest, totaling $600,000.

In early January 2022, the protests that swept the country turned into mass unrest, during which unknown persons were robbing and smashing public and private facilities, shops, trading houses and catering facilities. According to general information, the small and medium businesses suffered the most from the said pogroms and thefts. Many entrepreneurs faced a crisis that forced them to cut down their businesses.

The Rules for compensation of property damage caused to small and medium businesses as a result of the unrest in January 2022, approved by the Order of the Minister of National Economy, were adopted to help entrepreneurs to restore their business.

Some TKL clients were affected by the described events, having their stores in Almaty looted, trading equipment damaged or destroyed. Our associates, Aybek Kambaliyev, Aigerim Mamayeva and Rashid Kair, were engaged in submitting applications for property damages in the names of our clients under the general coordination of our Partner Ravil Kassilgov.

Given that the Damages Rules were developed in the shortest possible time, the TKL team encountered many defects and contradictions therein when preparing sets of documents for submission and during the application review period. Despite all the difficulties, the TKL's efforts helped our clients to obtain the favorable review of their applications and their damages were paid in full.
